Each year, thousands of college students head to the Sunshine State to enjoy four years or more of higher learning in the Florida sun. And why not? Florida is home to a huge number of colleges and universities, some known as "party schools," but many that have achieved high rankings among colleges throughout the United States.
Colleges are just about everywhere in Florida, from big cities like Miami, Tampa, Jacksonville, Gainesville, Sarasota and Fort Lauderdale, to much smaller towns both inland and on the coast.
The University of Florida, located in the northern town of Gainesville, is one of the largest and most academically diverse colleges on the East Coast. With 46,000 students, a 2,000-acre campus and more than 900 buildings, it's easy to get lost in the crowd here, so before you apply, be sure your preference is for a large university. In 1985, the School was granted membership to the Association of American Universities, comprised of the top 62 public and private institutions in North America. Students choose from more than 100 undergraduate majors, and there are a whopping 200 major areas of study for graduate students.
The list of Florida colleges goes on and on, from large schools that are part of the state system to small private, independent colleges, many lined with stately palm trees and exuding a relaxed atmosphere that's indicative of the Florida lifestyle.
