About Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Colleges:
Most Western physicians are skeptical of acupuncture (inserting needles into the body to manage pain) and other methods of Oriental medicine. However, the National Institutes of Health concluded in 1997 that "there is sufficient evidence . . . of acupuncture's value to expand its use into conventional medicine and to encourage further studies of its physiology and clinical value." More than thirty states now license acupuncturists and the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) has set national certification standards.
