Do you have an artistic eye and an attention for detail? Bring art and science together in the profession of architecture. After attending one of the many architecture schools, you could be responsible for designing the places where we live, work, shop and play. From homes to hospitals, from schools to shopping malls, an architect builds dreams and makes them reality.

Students interested in architecture have many career and education options. If you are interested in learning the skill of architectural computer aided drafting, or CAD (computer aided drawing), you can earn a certificate or degree at drafting and design schools offering those programs. There are several architecture colleges with different degree levels and fields of study that you can choose from below. If you want to become a licensed architect, you must obtain a professional degree from one of the 117 architecture schools that have degree programs accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). Professional architecture colleges may offer a five-year Bachelor of Architecture program, a two-year Master of Architecture program or even a three- to four-year Master of Architecture program for students with an undergraduate degree in another discipline. A typical Bachelor's program includes courses in:

Architects need to communicate their ideas visually to clients. Artistic ability is helpful, but not required. More importantly, an architect should be visually oriented and have the ability to conceptualize and understand spatial relationships.

What Tasks do Architects Perform?
Architects design many types of buildings, ranging from residential homes and schools to churches and larger commercial towers. Architects consider everything from aesthetic design elements to the most pragmatic details such as plumbing, electrical systems and air conditioning. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, some architects perform other construction related tasks, such as selecting contractors and negotiating the terms of construction contracts for clients. Architects also work in a variety of companies, including design firms, construction companies, and small firms.

What Education is Required to Become an Architect?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that most states require architects to possess an architecture degree from a program accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). As of 2012, 123 such programs were offered in the United States. However, professional standards vary by state, so some states accept degrees from nonaccredited programs. The NAAB accredits programs offering bachelor degrees, master's degrees and doctorate degrees in architecture. New graduates are typically required to work for three years before sitting for state licensing examinations.

What do Students Learn in Architecture School?
Architecture students take a variety of courses to prepare for their profession, ranging from cityscape design and composition to contemporary architecture and integrated design. Architecture students study photography, sculpture, technology and energy saving techniques. Students study the history of building and design and study design elements found in countries across the world.

What Continuing Education Requirements Must Architects Meet?
The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) tracks the continuing education requirements for each state. Some states like California require only five continuing education hours every two years while other states like Massachusetts require architects to take 12 hours every year.

Licensing requirements include a professional degree in architecture, a period of internship and a passing score on all divisions of the Architect Registration Examination (ARE). Candidates who pass the ARE and meet all standards established by their state board become licensed to practice in that state.
