Aviation is the exciting study of aircraft and flying. Those who are interested in studying can apply themselves to a wide range of programs, ranging from airport management to aerospace technology. In the United States there are over three hundred institutions of higher learning that offer degrees related to aviation. Most programs offer two year degrees or four year degrees, so it is important to decide what you want to pursue related to aviation to decide the program to follow.

With training from an aviation maintenance school, an airline mechanic school or an airplane mechanic school, you can have a solid background in airplanes and aviation. The majority of aircraft mechanics are trained in the 200 or so aviation mechanic schools certified by the FAA. Programs vary for each college, but many schools offer training programs in Aviation Maintenance Technology, Avionics Technology and AASA Instrument/Electronics. Courses in mathematics, physics, chemistry, electronics, computer science and mechanical drawing skills are important for aircraft mechanics as they relate closely to the principles of aircraft aviation. However, many of the aviation mechanic schools offer hands-on training so that you can quickly learn the skills you need to specialize in preventative aircraft care.

Those interested in flying planes will still need a pilot's license, but aviation degrees can help with opening doors to jobs and helping your resume stand out. Pilots must also know a great deal about the mechanics of the plane so they can tell if something is wrong before takeoff or troubleshoot in the air.

The two and four year degrees offered and many institutions will focus on the physical side of flying. Expect to take courses related to physics, engineering, and mathematics. It is also vital for anyone flying a plane to pass a communications exam.

For those looking to work with planes aviation degrees can be very helpful and valuable. A two or four year degree should get you well on your way of where you would like to go and help you stand out from the crowd. Planes are incredibly machines and we need people who know how to operate them from the inside and out.
