Internships great way to prepare for career
February 7th, 2005There are many programs out there that promote internships. Each has a different model and enjoys different levels of success.
The goal of all internship programs should be to prepare students for a career in the desired field. Through real-world expereince, students are better prepared to make the transition from student to employee. They have a better understanding of what the job entails and what is expected of them.
A recent article addresses the success of an internship program that places high school seniors with local companies to explore potential careers before heading off to college and choosing a major.
“Our students relish the chance to work in a real-world environment,” Principal Dawn Riggie says. “I think it’s a great opportunity for the girls to explore areas that they are interested in and to find out what the jobs and careers really involve. A lot of times young people get glamourous ideas of what careers might be like. It’s a good thing for them to see the nitty-gritty work.”
