Many adults considering going back to school wonder if they are too old to be successful. In a culture that stresses the young and the cool it’s no wonder why people are nervous about putting themselves in a candidate pool that’s half their age. Also, school is expensive. No one wants to spend a bunch of money on something that won’t ultimately help them advance in their career or break into another career. But if you are an adult, considering furthering your education in the criminal justice field, you are not too old.

There are really two things to consider when deciding if you are too old for criminal justice school. One is what do you plan to do with the degree? If you plan to use the degree to benefit you, through pay raise or some other incentive, in your current work, then of course you’re not too old. Anyone with dedication can be successful in higher education. In fact, some of the best students are the mature ones because they bring practical life experience into their classroom conversations and assignments, and also because they understand the value that education can bring to a person’s life. Many teacher’s are thrilled to have adult students for the simple reason that, in general, they take their educational success more seriously than their younger counterparts.

If you plan to use the degree to change into another line of work, then you’ll want to consider if it’s worth the risk of change. Naturally, any time you’re putting yourself back into the job market you risk losing the job to someone that’s better qualified. One additional concern that many people have is regarding getting into the police academy in their late 30′s, 40′s or even 50′s. Quite simply, this should not be your primary concern. Mature people go through the police academy all the time. It’s not a cakewalk for anyone, but it’s possible. If your in good physical health and you want a challenge you can be successful in the police academy and in finding a job in a police department. Many people believe that departments have maximum age limits. Whereas this may be true for some, it’s not true in all cases.

You can be successful in criminal justice school regardless of your age. Bring a good attitude and a willingness to work hard. Also, be strategic; how how you want to use this degree when you graduate.
