Of all the Southern states, Georgia offers one of the most extensive and diverse selections of colleges and universities. Many prospective students view Georgia as a great place to live, thanks to its sunny days and warm temperatures and vibrant, large cities. From the bustling and historic capital city of Atlanta in the northwest to the genteel Southern city of Savannah on the southern coast, Georgia is a state of contrasts, and students are presented with a myriad of different opportunities for their college years.

Just like many large states, Georgia's state college system is immense, comprised of at least a dozen four-year schools and several two-year colleges that offer Associate degrees in a variety of subjects. The colleges in this system are immensely affordable, especially for residents, and are located throughout the state.

As is true with many southern states, Georgia is home to a number of historically black colleges and universities, many highly acclaimed for their academics. Spelman College is one such college, founded in 1881 for the education of black women. This four-year liberal arts college has long been supported by comedian Bill Cosby, who presented the school with a $20 million gift in 1987. The College offers everything from anthropology to sociology, with a strong emphasis on the fine arts.
