As far as Midwestern states go, Illinois has one of the largest concentrations of colleges and universities. Many are found in and around the wonderful city of Chicago, situated on the shores of Lake Michigan, providing students with a wealth of arts, culture, international dining and recreational activities.
Indeed, Chicago colleges are diverse, but the city is known as one of the best places to study law, with a number of fine universities and colleges offering exemplary programs.
Other Illinois cities, like Peoria, Rockford, Decatur and the capital city of Springfield, are home to a handful of smaller colleges as well as a state university or two.
One Illinois school that's always found at the top of the "best" lists published by magazines and reviews is Northwestern University. Located in Evanston, a suburb of Chicago, this 150-year-old private institution offers several highly acclaimed programs. Its Kellogg School of Management is among the best in the country, the School of Law graduates outstanding lawyers, and the Medill School of Journalism is exemplary. Famous alumni include director Garry Marshall, Joie Chen of CBS Evening News, Richard Threlkeld, also with CBS, and Chicago Tribune editor Jack Fuller.
The University of Illinois' Urbana-Champaign campus is also highly critically acclaimed. Home of the Fighting Illini Big Ten varsity teams, UI boasts both a College of Medicine and College of Law in addition to several other schools, including an Institute of Aviation. There are about 40,000 full-time students on campus in this east central Illinois city, including many international students. There are also UI campuses in Chicago and Springfield.
