The Bluegrass State of Kentucky is home to a number of colleges and universities, ranging from state-sponsored schools to a large number of small, independent colleges. Kentucky is vast, and colleges are literally spread all over the state, from the large cities like Lexington, Frankfort and Louisville to small towns in the middle of nowhere. The University of Kentucky sits on a 670-acre campus in downtown Lexington. As far as sports are concerned, UK has a highly successful basketball program, and its cheerleading squad is a national champion.
Kentucky boasts 19 independent colleges and universities, and many of them are among the most affordable in the state. These colleges enroll about 25,000 students, many of whom are state residents. Check out Alice Lloyd College, a highly regarded liberal arts school in the Appalachian region; Berea College, the first interracial and coeducational college in the south; Midway, Kentucky's only college for women; or Thomas More, a Catholic college founded by the Benedictine Sisters and often touted as a Kentucky "Best Buy" college.
