The training for a medical assistant requires one to two years of training at a technical or vocational school. A certificate in medical assisting can be attained in one year or less and an associate degree takes two years of study. Students in medical assisting training programs take courses that cover basic patient care, communications, medical terminology, and related subjects. Associate degree programs offer more courses and electives than certificate programs.

Physician's offices, hospitals, long-term care centers and all types of health services require professionals who are compassionate and competent to provide care to their patients and clients. Medical assistants work primarily in physician's offices where they perform duties such as greeting patients, checking them in, obtaining patient histories and taking vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, and temperature). They prepare exam rooms for doctors and may obtain urine specimens from patients, draw blood and perform finger sticks to check iron or blood sugar levels.

After completion of a certificate or degree, a medical assistant who graduates from an accredited program can take the American Association for Medical Assistants' certification examination. Employers favor medical assistants who have achieved certification. The annual median wage for medical assistants is in the $30,000 range, but the salaries depend largely on the location and the work environment. Medical assisting can be a segue into a higher level medical jobs and gives the person who is interested in working in the field a chance to try it without spending several years in school.
