Massachusetts may not be a large state, but it's certainly big on education. It's home to dozens of colleges, including an excellent state system and many private colleges and universities that continuously take honors as the best in the country.

For those seeking an Ivy League education, the Ivy League university that is most consistently given the number one spot in college guides is Harvard University in Cambridge, just across the Charles River from Boston. One could go on about Harvard's attributes for days, but the fact that it's almost always ranked number one says it all. Even though most of Massachusetts' highly acclaimed schools are private institutions, don't discount the state system of universities. The University of Massachusetts in Amherst, the flagship of the state's university system, is also found on those famous "best of" lists. UMass Amherst excels in research, academics, fine arts and athletics and boasts an enrollment of about 25,000 students.
