With the Gulf of Mexico as its southern border and the crooked waters of the mighty Mississippi River on the west, the state of Mississippi has a lot to offer. Though traditionally it has been a state plagued with poverty, many of its colleges and universities have overcome the stigma of being the state that provides a poor public education to its children and strive to offer excellent higher education opportunities to its older students.
The University of Mississippi, fondly known as Ole Miss, is one of those schools, and thanks to a recent capital campaign with staggering positive results, the school continues to grow in excellence. Total enrollment at the university's three campuses and medical center is about 17,000 and about 2/3 of the students come from within the state. The university has 11 schools and colleges, including law, medicine and pharmacy schools. The school's athletes compete in the highest division and have had post-season success.
Jackson State University is a historically black university with seven undergraduate academic schools: Allied Health Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, Liberal Arts, Science and Technology, and Social Work. Located in downtown Jackson, it's known as Mississippi's "urban university."
