New Jersey Colleges and UniversitiesThe New Jersey College Scene - An Exclusive U.S. College Search Report
Comedians often make jokes about New Jersey, its lack of beauty and its rough-around-the-edges citizens. But when it comes to higher education, New Jersey can be found near the head of the class with a number of colleges and universities that continually hit the "best of" lists. While it's true that portions of the state are quite unattractive, much of it is rather lovely with pretty seashore destinations in the south and quaint university towns scattered throughout the state.
The gem in New Jersey's higher education crown is the Ivy League Princeton University in the beautiful central NJ town of Princeton. Princeton usually takes the number one or two on most college review lists and is world-renowned for its mathematics and science programs. Enrollment at Princeton is highly selective and the university will often choose only one student from a particular high school or district. Currently, the school is home to about 4,600 undergraduate and 2,000 graduate students. The faculty includes recipients of the Nobel Prize in physics, literature, economic sciences and medicine. The 500-acre campus is quintessential Ivy League and offers easy access to New York and Philadelphia.
New Jersey also boasts one of the leading technological institutes in the country - Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, outside of New York City. The school opened in 1870 and, at first, only offered degrees in mechanical engineering. Today the institute grants undergraduate degrees in chemistry, computer science, mathematics, physics, humanities and computational science. Graduate programs are offered in similar fields.
Additional state universities have made their mark on the New Jersey education scene as well. Rowan University (formerly Glassboro State) is in southern New Jersey and is acclaimed for its College of Engineering. In the north, Montclair State University, the second-largest in the state, boasts highly acclaimed Colleges of Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Mathematics, and Education and Human Service, as well as their School of the Arts and School of Business.
