New Hampshire's finest institution of higher learning is Dartmouth College. Located in Hanover, near the Vermont border, it's a private, four-year Ivy League institution and is the ninth oldest college in the nation. The college focuses on undergraduate education but does have graduate schools in business, engineering and medicine and 18 graduate programs in the arts and sciences. Class sizes here are small in comparison with other Ivy League schools, and the school enrolls only about 8,000 students total. The medical school at Dartmouth is the fourth-oldest in the country and one of the finest. Famous alumni include poet Robert Frost, orator Daniel Webster, children's author Theodore Geisel (Dr. Seuss) and former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop.

The University of New Hampshire is highly acclaimed among public universities in New England. Located not far from the coast, in Durham, this research university has 100 majors from which its students can choose and offers over of 2,000 classes. Its colleges include engineering and physical sciences, liberal arts, health and human services, applied science, and business and economics. The university's Manchester campus caters to less traditional students and offers evening and Saturday courses.
