South Carolina, "The Palmetto State", beckons the college student to come and enjoy the sunshine and the mostly warm weather that graces the state year-round. With the beautiful beaches of the Grand Strand and historic Charleston on the Atlantic Coast and welcoming Southern cities like Columbia, Greenville, and Spartanburg spread throughout the remainder of South Carolina, college students can enjoy a variety of lifestyles in this pretty southern state, depending on which college they choose.
The main campus of the University of South Carolina is located in the capital city of Columbia. A truly urban campus with modern high-rise buildings, this flagship location continues to expand, thanks to funding for research initiatives in nanotechnology, health sciences, future fuels, and the environment. The Columbia campus enrolls about 25,000 students and offers more than 350 degree programs. Additional campuses are available throughout the state, with "senior" campuses in Aiken, Beaufort, and Greenville/Spartanburg and "regional" campuses in Lancaster, Sumter, Salkehatchie, and Union.
Usually appearing on the list of top colleges in the nation is highly-selective Clemson University, located near Greenville. This public university, founded as a military college in 1889, enrolls approximately 16,000 students and offers about 75 fields of study at its five colleges, which include Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences; Architecture, Arts and Humanities; Business and Behavioral Science; Engineering and Science; and Health, Education and Human Development. The Clemson Tigers are highly-acclaimed in Division I athletics, especially football and basketball.
The Citadel is South Carolina's military college. Located in downtown Charleston, the school's mission is to prepare students to "become principled leaders in all walks of life by instilling core values in a disciplined academic environment." Majors range from biology to civil and electrical engineering to psychology. Alumni include many military, government, and business leaders.
