Virginia is yet another state that provides a wealth of opportunities for the college student. Depending on your selection, one may wind up close to Washington D.C. and the opportunities it provides for those interested in government and other urban studies. Other towns offer close proximity to beaches and the vast waters of the Chesapeake Bay. On the western side of the state, students will be treated to the magnificent Appalachian Mountains and the recreation that area provides for avid outdoor types. Not so far from the Appalachian Trail and located near Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, potential students will find the University of Virginia. As a matter of fact, Jefferson was the founder of the college and the designer of many of its stately buildings. U.Va. continuously ranks among the top 10 public universities in the nation and the top 25 of all universities, public or private. Current student enrollment is about 20,000 and the university boasts the highest African American graduation rate among major public institutions in America. The University offers forty-eight bachelor's degrees in forty-six fields, ninety-four master's degrees in sixty-four fields, six educational specialist degrees, two first-professional degrees (law and medicine), and fifty-five doctoral degrees in fifty-four fields. Athletes compete in the NCAA Division I Atlantic Coast Conference. Notable alumni include Woodrow Wilson, Edgar Allen Poe, explorer Richard Byrd, Edward and Robert Kennedy, and TV personality Katie Couric.
Virginia Tech (officially Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University) is located in the mountain town of Blacksburg and consists of 8 colleges and a graduate school. The school's enrollment is approximately 25,000 and those in attendance can choose from about 60 bachelor's degree and 120 master's and doctoral programs. Colleges include Agriculture & Life Sciences, Architecture & Urban Studies, Engineering, Liberal Arts & Human Sciences, Natural Resources, Business, Science, and Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine.
Aside from several other small colleges, Virginia also boasts an extensive community college system, spread throughout the state, for those seeking two-year degree programs.
