Wyoming is more a center for outdoor recreation than it is a center for higher education. Home to a few National Parks, the Rocky Mountains, and lots of other natural wonders, Wyoming is a mecca for those who love outdoor activity. The University of Wyoming, in the southern town of Laramie, is the state's only provider of baccalaureate and graduate education. Though small in enrollment, this major research university provides students the opportunity to enjoy one of more than 180 areas of study as well as excellent research facilities. The school is also home to 8 museums and an excellent College of Law. As is true with many state universities, outreach into the community is important, so the university also maintains the UW/Casper College Center, nine outreach education centers across Wyoming, and Cooperative Extension Service centers in each of the state's 23 counties as well as the Wind River Indian Reservation. The university is very affordable for Wyoming residents.

Preston University is a private school located in Cheyenne. Though Preston offers some on-campus programs of study, most of its courses are completed through Distance Learning, enabling non-traditional students to earn associates, bachelor's, and master's degrees.

Wyoming also boasts a community college system that includes seven locations spread throughout the state, with each offering associates degrees in a wide variety of subjects.
